Volunteer Frequently Asked Questions

Thinking about volunteering? help us create a weekend that will last a lifetime while you get to connect with others just like you!

  • CLICK HERE to apply to Sun Escape and review our Camp Volunteer Eligibility requirements. After you submit your application, a team member from either Shadow Jumpers or the UPA will contact you to talk about next steps.

  • No. Sun Escape reserves the right to make selections and decisions based on a variety of factors deemed appropriate and in the best interest of camp itself. If you are not accepted a team member will explain via email the factors that went into that decision.

  • Sun Escape and Victory Junction allow for volunteers ages 18 and older.

  • If you are one of our volunteers accepted after our initial application process, Sun Escape will send you via email Victory Junctions online portal. Here you will have to submit your personal information, release forms and certain immunizations required by the camp grounds.

Additionally, Victory Junction will be required to run a background check and volunteers will need to do a pre camp virtual meeting.

  • Victory Junction will require proof of the below immunizations. A titers test can be done for MMR and VARICELLA in replace of shot proof.

    • MMR – Proof of two shots or Titers Test accepted if proof not available.

    • VARICELLA – Proof of two shots or Titers Test accepted if proof not available.

    • TDAP - Vaccine required or booster if immunization isn't within the last ten years.

    • MEDICAL REP ONLY: Hepatitis B: 3 doses of Hep B vaccine for Medical Volunteers

The COVID-19 vaccine and a COVID test are not required for camp

These immunization records are mandatory and due no later than the Monday of camp week. Failure to submit approved immunizations records in time will keep you from being able to attend camp and your travel expense stipend will be denied.

  • We are so appreciative of your willingness to play a role in making our first camp experience a memorable one. As a volunteer you will fall into one of two categories

FAMILY PAL - Family Pals are paired with a family and serve as their guide throughout the weekend. That means welcoming your family to camp, escorting them throughout their camp experience and enjoying the joys of camp with all members of the family. Your role is very important because as the initial face of Sun Escape and the family’s constant representation, you have a major part in the feel of camp and the community that is established. In short, laugh, play and care for your campers

PROGRAM PALS - Program Pals provide programming which gives our campers the opportunity to try new things and push beyond their comfort zone. Volunteers in this role are assigned to oversee a program area such as Arts & Crafts, Woodshop, Archery, Boating, Fishing, Adam’s Race Shop or the Fab Shop. As a Program Pal you will join a family when your program area is closed so you can continue to experience all of the magic of camp.

  • Family Pals are selected from our pool of volunteers based on who we believe is the best overall fit for that specific camp family.

In some cases, photo-sensitive volunteers may be prioritized as Family Pals.

  • Not at all. Your job is to be a point of contact for all your family's questions and also their tour guide to get them around camp during activities.

You should never be alone with your campers and a caregiver shouldn't leave you with their children.

When in doubt, let your family set the pace on how much or little you should be involved.

  • Program Pals may be asked to work one specific area but areas open and close throughout the day.

During Friday’s Orientation you will be assigned what family and volunteer to tag along with when your designated area is closed.

  • After the application process has concluded, we will work with Victory Junction to finalize slotting. You should expect to hear via email whether you are a Family Pal or Program Pal around early April.

  • Yes and we encourage you start a connection with your camp family. You and your camp family will each be given your basic contact information prior to camp. Both of you may choose to reach out (and respond) at your own discretion.

  • Yes! New this year we will have two nights where volunteers will be able to get together after hours and have some fun of their own!

We also encourage volunteers to arrive to Greensboro Wednesday Night before camp as many volunteers like to get together then too.

  • We will make every effort to try and keep specific volunteer pairings together but cannot guarantee. However there will be numerous opportunities throughout the weekend to take in the fun together despite potentially having different roles.

  • Volunteers are expected to arrive to camp around 2pm that Thursday to start training before camp starts at 5pm. They will expect to leave camp around noon that Sunday. Each volunteer's travel plans will differ depending on where they are arriving from and how they choose to travel. For some of our volunteers that are flying, it will make more sense to arrive Wednesday night in Greensboro.

In those cases, we ask our families to book their Wednesday travel with the understanding that Sun Escape will provide them with a hotel room for that Wednesday night in Greensboro North Carolina.

We want to book that room for you (as opposed to reimbursement) because we want to group all of our Wednesday night volunteers and families together at the same hotel

  • All of Sun Escape's activities are indoors or set for a late evening / night time start.

While Sun Escape is taking every precaution to remove sun exposure from the weekend’s activities, there will be moments where your family will have to walk a few minutes between buildings (partially covered) or a five-minute walk from your cabin to the main camp area; once one way in the morning and potentially once in the afternoon round trip (not covered).

To help combat this minimal exposure, each volunteer and photosensitive child will be given a high-end UV umbrella at the start of camp and, for our more photosensitive campers, a small bus will be available on site.

Sun Escape has also noted all the indoor lighting used in each facility and its strength. In most cases, indoor lights can be turned off on request.

We want this experience to be as comfortable as possible. If you feel you will need additional protections please notify a team member as far in advance before attending sun escape.

  • Yes, for safety we ask all of our families and volunteers to pack their usual sun protective garments and items as if they were going on a normal vacation. Sun Escape's environment welcomes covering up as a group if necessary and some campers and volunteers have proactively chosen to wear gloves or face coverings.

  • Volunteers and support staff won’t be on cabin row but grouped together in communal housing near the Super Dome.

Structured similar to a college dorm, most units can hold 4 to 5 guests, with each unit coming with two open bedrooms, a common area and shared bathroom. If you have designated that you are traveling with a significant other or family member, we will make sure to have you room together.

  • Yes all meals for the weekend will be provided by Victory Junction kitchen on site, including foods this year for volunteer orientation Thursday at 2pm.

CLICK HERE to view a sample meal plan from last year's Sun Escape.

  • Yes, Victory Junction has its own medical building and facility. A Victory Junction medical representative will be on site each day of camp.

Also Sun Escape supplies its own medical professional who comes from the photo sensitive field. That doctor will be on site 24/7 as a volunteer and can assist in anyway need be.

  • All Volunteers will receive a $500 stipend to help cover their airfare, gas and all other related travel expenses. If a volunteer lives on the west coast (defined by a state that touches the pacific ocean) that stipend amount will increase to $600.

Volunteers will book travel on their own and file for reimbursement after camp.

  • Volunteers that arrive to Greensboro North Carolina before Thursday at 2:00pm will have a shuttle bus provided to take them to Victory Junction. The bus will leave the GREENSBORO AIRPORT MARRIOTT HOTEL. There is a 24/7 shuttle that can take you from the airport to the hotel pick up spot (about a 5 minute ride).

If you may arrive to Greensboro after 2pm for reasons outside your control, volunteers will have to ride share to Victory Junction but this ride share will be reimbursable in addition to your $500-$600 stipend.

Volunteers that arrive to Sun Escape via a different airport (Charlotte or Raleigh) may choose to rent a car. That rental would fall under their $500-$600 total travel stipend limit.

Volunteers flying out of Greensboro on Sunday after camp has concluded will have a bus to take them from camp to the airport. The bus will leave at the conclusion at camp. It will be one way and only stop at the Greensboro airport.

  • GPS ADDRESS:

5467 Fred Lineberry Rd Randleman, NC 27317

Families and volunteers driving or arriving by ride share will want to enter through GATE 1

  • The weather in that part of North Carolina during the month of May can be unpredictable. Last year's Sun Escape had hot humid weather the week of camp and thunderstorms all during the weekend. We advise parents to plan for everything, that include pollen and seasonal allergies.
