About Volunteering

Our volunteers are the backbone of Sun Escape Weekend. They serve as camp guides, leaders, and mentors!

Join us in 2025 to make an impact in the life of children, youth and young adults facing these rare circumstances.

Sun Escape volunteers come from a wide variety of backgrounds and life experiences. Whether you are personally connected to a photosensitive diagnosis, or someone with a passion for working in these communities, there are so many ways to get involved!

With the help of volunteers like you, we can deliver a fun and sun proof experience to children, and promote a deeper understanding and appreciation for growing up with these unique conditions.

Volunteer Roles

Family Pals are paired with a family and serve as their guide throughout the weekend. That means welcoming your family to camp, escorting them throughout their camp experience and enjoying the joys of camp with all members of the family. Your role is very important because as the initial face of Sun Escape and the family’s constant representation, you have a major part in the feel of camp and the community that is established. In short, laugh, play and care for your campers

Program Pals provide programming which gives our campers the opportunity to try new things and push beyond their comfort zone. Volunteers in this role are assigned to oversee a program area such as Arts & Crafts, Woodshop, Archery, Boating, Fishing, Adam’s Race Shop or the Fab Shop. As a Program Pal you will join a family when your program area is closed so you can continue to experience all of the magic of camp.

Volunteer Training Dates & Requirements

Volunteers are required to attend one of two virtual introduction videos with Victory Junction. They will take place December-January.

Volunteers are required to arrive to Victory Junction early the Thursday of camp at 2:00pm for in person training before campers arrive later that evening.

Volunteers are required to provide proof of certain immunizations per Victory Junction (not COVID 19).

Travel Stipend

Volunteers will receive a $500 stipend after camp has concluded to help cover the cost of airfare and gas. Volunteers traveling from the west coast will receive $600 stipends.

Volunteers who have to arrive to the North Carolina area a day early will have a hotel room provided for them by Sun Escape.
