What is a Weekend like at Sun Escape?
Coming to camp can be a big decision (and a lot of travel) for a photosensitive family. Which is why we wanted to showcase what a sun safe weekend at Victory Junction looks like.
Look below to have a sneak-peak of a weekend at camp that is full of activities and experiences. Leave the tents and sleeping bags at home… at our camp, enjoy state-of-the-art facilities, sun precautions, around-the-clock access to medical staff, life-changing friendships and a sense of community in taking on the UV rays.
Pre Camp Meet Up
Before camp starts Thursday evening, Shadow Jumpers and the United Porphyrias Association hold a Welcome Room at our pre camp hotel in Greensboro, North Carolina. Families and volunteers are invited to come, hang out and get to know one another before departing for Victory Junction at 5:00pm.
Getting situated
Families arrive by bus, car and ride share before they are checked in by the Victory Junction staff. After getting settled into your cabin your family will make their way to dinner before being debriefed on the weekend’s plan and procedures. Checking in all 32 families takes time so in 2026 our rec center area will be open for our earlier families to hang out before our debrief begins
Good Morning
Families at camp stay in one of our 16 cozy cabins situated along cabin row (2 to a cabin).
Is your family made up of early risers? We offer activities for campers as early as 8:00 a.m. for those eager to kickstart their day before the regular schedule begins.
Lets Eat
Breakfast, lunch and dinner are provided each day of camp at our cafeteria aka FUEL STOP location. In 2026 we expect meals to be served buffet style.
Open 24/7, our cafeteria also offers grab and go snacks in addition to drinks and coffee.
Camp Theme
Starting in 2025, each of our camp weekends will have its own unique theme aimed at highlighting and embracing the uniqueness in our campers’ circumstances with the sun. Last year that theme was “Be Heroic” which embraced the ways our campers have to “suit up” in protective gear
Making Memories
Camp days are filled with activities throughout each morning, afternoon and the late evening. Those sun safe activities include zip lining, archery, horseback riding, fishing, arts & crafts, bowling, a water park and more. Each family will have scheduled time for each program area with open periods to go wherever they like.
Sun Safe
We aim to take the sun out of your weekend fun. To do that we cover vulnerable exposed windows in your family cabin and program areas, we have a shuttle bus (with covered windows) to help get around certain parts of the grounds and every camper get a high end sun specific umbrella.
Party on the Lawn
At Victory Junction, one event stands out as an absolute favorite among most campers – NASCARnival. This electrifying evening extravaganza (after the lawn is completely safe from the sun) is designed to give our campers a carnival-like experience filled with games, music, snacks, and the opportunity to connect with everyone at Camp.
Camp Connections
Just as important as the fun is the organized periods where our campers (and parents) get time to break off into their own groups and talk further about living (and parenting) with these photosensitive conditions
night time is our favorite time
When the sun goes down, the fun has just begun. Whether around the campfire, fishing on the dock, performing at Stage Night or taking in some fireworks (new in 2026), there’s always something to keep the party going.
Medical Care
Victory Junction provides on site medical care available for each camper. Their medical facility, called the BODY SHOP, is equipped with all the medical equipment and supplies needed to provide routine care. We also have a photosensitive medical professional on the camp grounds all weekend for sun specific concerns.
